Jamaica morning briefing: fire response upgrade, youth mother support and business links with Africa

CVM’s Sunrise programme on June 8 covered a wide mix of Jamaican public affairs, including new emergency-response plans, support for adolescent mothers, food safety warnings, business financing opportunities and legal issues affecting fathers.

The Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation is to receive $4.5 million from proceeds of the Run for Mom 5K, staged by the Heart and Vascular Centre with support from Scotiabank and other partners. Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Minister Olivia Grange said the money would help young mothers continue their education while caring for their children, while stressing that the support is not meant to promote adolescent pregnancy.

Local Government and Community Development Minister Desmond McKenzie also announced plans for a Jamaica Fire Brigade emergency communication centre at the Waterford Fire Station in St. Catherine. The facility is expected to use an automatic station alerting system, sending emergency notifications within 64 seconds of a call and dispatching firefighters within another 60 seconds. The first phase will cover Kingston and St. Catherine, with islandwide expansion planned for the next financial year.

The programme also reported road-safety concerns after fatal crashes in St. Elizabeth and neighbouring areas, including the death of 59-year-old Loelin Johnson and seven-month-old Kamar Forbes. National Road Safety Council chairman Earl Jarrett urged stronger enforcement, warning against improper overtaking, failure to keep left and failure to use seat belts and child restraints.

Other discussions included Veterinary Public Health Inspector for St. Thomas Nardian Neard urging consumers to buy inspected meat and animal products from reputable sources, and Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. speaking from Geneva on artificial intelligence, job transition and regulation of platform work.

Money commentator Carlton G. Stewart outlined opportunities tied to Jamaica’s partnership with the African Export-Import Bank, saying businesses should formalise operations, improve record-keeping and prepare for trade beyond Jamaica. The show also featured legal guidance from attorney Courtney Williams on fathers’ rights, custody, access and guardianship, along with business features on Knowledge Nest and Amber Nexus, an AI-powered calling assistant from Amber Group.
