Governor-General Urges Stronger Regional Action Against Corruption

Kingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica: Governor-General of Jamaica, the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, has called for greater regional collaboration to combat corruption, warning that emerging technologies and increasingly sophisticated criminal activities require a united response from Caribbean nations and the wider Commonwealth.

The appeal was made during the opening ceremony of the 12th Annual Commonwealth Caribbean Association of Integrity Commissions and Anti-Corruption Bodies (CCAICAB) Conference at the ROK Hotel in Kingston on June 1. The Governor-General’s address was delivered by Custos of Kingston, Hon. Steadman Fuller.

Sir Patrick emphasized that countries across the region share a common responsibility to strengthen integrity, transparency and accountability in public institutions.

“While many nations are represented in this room today, we are united by one common goal, which is to strengthen integrity, confront corruption and safeguard public trust within our institutions and societies,” the Governor-General said.

He noted that rapid advances in artificial intelligence, digital communication and financial technologies have transformed the way governments, businesses and citizens interact. However, these developments have also created opportunities for cyber-enabled fraud, digital manipulation, illicit financial activities and other forms of corruption that often transcend national borders.

The four-day conference, being held under the theme “Strengthening Regional Integrity Efforts and Anti-Corruption Mechanisms in an Evolving Global Environment,” brings together delegates from across the Caribbean and the Commonwealth to discuss strategies for improving governance and strengthening anti-corruption frameworks.

Sir Patrick stressed that integrity must be more than an aspirational ideal and should instead be embedded in public policy, reinforced through strong institutions and protected through regional cooperation.

He also praised the work of CCAICAB in fostering collaboration among member states, sharing best practices and promoting good governance throughout the region.

The Governor-General expressed confidence that the conference will help deepen partnerships, sharpen anti-corruption strategies and inspire innovative approaches to safeguarding democratic institutions and public trust.

The conference continues through June 4.
