Jamaican boxers are set for a new competition platform on Sunday, when former national representative Sakima Mullings stages the first Spar Wars fight night at the Giwi Car Park in Cross Roads, Kingston.

The series was launched on Tuesday at the VIP lounge of the car park. Mullings said the aim is to create a steady schedule of bouts so local fighters can sharpen their craft and move closer to regional and world-level standards. He said the plan is for Spar Wars to return about every six weeks, giving boxers consistent activity and helping them develop as high-performance athletes.

Only five fights are listed for the opening card, a move Mullings said was intentional. He explained that a smaller first staging would allow each boxer to receive more attention, while giving the organisers room to settle the operations of the new event before expanding to larger cards in the future.

Daniel Hilton, who made his professional debut in December last year, is among the leading names on Sunday's programme. Hilton said he expects to deliver a strong showing and demonstrate his boxing ability.

Amateur boxer Toraniano "The Medic" Nicholas also welcomed the chance to compete on a bigger stage. He said the series is creating interest around the sport and giving fighters an opportunity to show what they can do.

Mullings told patrons to expect competitive matchups from the opening bout through to the main event. He said the fighters will be representing themselves, their communities, their families and, potentially, Jamaica.

The first Spar Wars card is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Giwi Car Park in Cross Roads, Kingston.
