Samuda to Represent Jamaica at Our Ocean Conference in Kenya

1 min readKingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Minister of Water, Environment and Climate Change Matthew Samuda is scheduled to be in Mombasa and Kilifi counties, Kenya, from June 16 to 18 for the 11th Our Ocean Conference, known as OOC11.

The meeting is being staged under the theme "Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future" and is notable as the first time the international conference will take place on the African continent. It is expected to draw government leaders, policy officials, scientists and other major interests for discussions on protecting the seas, building climate resilience and developing the blue economy in a sustainable way.

In a statement, the Ministry of Water, Environment and Climate Change said Samuda's attendance underlines Jamaica's continued focus on responsible environmental management and cooperation with global partners. The ministry said Jamaica, as a Small Island Developing State, has long advocated for deeper international partnerships and greater financing to safeguard marine ecosystems while supporting viable opportunities for people in coastal areas.

Samuda is also expected to take part in senior-level sessions and bilateral engagements aimed at improving cooperation between countries and presenting Jamaica's work in ocean governance and environmental management. The release said the Government remains focused on policies that defend Jamaica's natural assets while also supporting worldwide action on climate change and ocean health.
