Sanjae Seymour wins boys under-20 200m semi-final at JAAA national championships

Sanjae Seymour of William Knibb High School took charge of the boys under-20 200 metres semi-final on Day Three of the JAAA/PUMA National Junior and Senior Championships, winning in 21.57 seconds to secure the only automatic place in the final.

The Carifta Games champion and two-time Boys' Class One 200m winner at Champs broke cleanly from the start and led comfortably through the bend, staying well clear of Nathaniel Martin before easing across the line. Martin, who claimed the under-20 100m title the previous night, finished second in 21.77 from lane eight.

Because only the heat winner was guaranteed passage to the final, Martin appeared to run within himself rather than push Seymour all the way to the tape. Observers had viewed the matchup as a major test for the 100m champion against a Commonwealth Games gold medallist whose personal best stands at 20.63 seconds. Seymour needed only 21.61 in a minus 3.1 metres per second headwind to advance, a standard he cleared comfortably before glancing at the scoreboard on his way through.

Martin has already booked selection for Eugene, Oregon, and commentary suggested he was content to bank a solid time while Seymour remained clearly the strongest performer in the field. Martin has not yet had the opportunity to represent Jamaica College at Champs, but his 100m victory had shown promise heading into the longer sprint.

The field also included Trey Barrett of St Jago in lane two, Akeem Graham of Charlemont High in lane one, and Roshane Malcolm of Falcons Athletics. Shane Jervis of Green Island was listed among the entrants but did not take lane seven when the race got under way. Harrison and Maturin were also named on the start list.

Analysts noted that Martin's 21.77 should be strong enough to advance as a fastest loser given the difficult wind at the venue, though the cut-off could still shift depending on conditions in the remaining semi-finals.
