Serena Williams is moving on to the Berlin Open this week as her comeback to professional tennis continues, now with a different doubles teammate following the premature close of her Queen's Club campaign.
The 44-year-old American, winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, returned at Queen's Club after almost four years away from the game. She partnered Victoria Mboko, and the pair made an immediate statement by beating third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez in straight sets.
That progress ended before the quarter-final, after Mboko took a heavy fall while playing singles and the doubles team had to pull out.
Williams has quickly reset for Berlin, where she will join forces with Karolina Muchova. The 29-year-old Czech, ranked world number 10, has twice reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals and adds a strong attacking presence to the partnership.
With Wimbledon approaching, attention now turns to how Williams and Muchova perform together on the Berlin clay.
