National Thanksgiving service set for July 26 at Olson Memorial Church of God

The Government of Jamaica, through the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, will stage the National Emancipation and Independence Thanksgiving Church Service on Sunday, July 26, 2026, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Olson Memorial Church of God, 35 Hope Road, Kingston 10.

The observance is the formal spiritual opening of Jamaica’s Emancipation and Independence season. Government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, church leaders, civic organisation representatives, and other invited guests are expected to attend as the country gathers for worship, reflection, and thanksgiving.

The service is a long-standing national tradition in which Jamaicans give thanks for the country’s passage from slavery to freedom and from colonial rule to independence. Prayer, scripture, music, and messages of hope are used to foster unity and to seek God’s continued guidance, protection, and blessings for the nation and its people.

The occasion links two historic milestones. Emancipation Day on August 1 marks the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834. Although the apprenticeship system continued until 1838, Emancipation stands as a symbol of the resilience, courage, and sacrifice of enslaved Africans whose fight for freedom underpins modern Jamaica. Independence Day on August 6 marks Jamaica’s attainment of political independence from Britain in 1962 and the birth of a sovereign state grounded in democracy, cultural pride, economic development, and self-determination.

Organisers say the Thanksgiving Church Service gives Jamaicans at home and in the Diaspora space to reflect on the nation’s heritage, honour those who went before, celebrate achievements, and renew a commitment to a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Jamaica.
