St Catherine inmate to face circuit court in prison murder case

A prisoner accused of fatally stabbing another inmate at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre last year will have to answer the murder allegation in court.

Appolos Atkinson, who is being held at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre, was before the St Catherine Parish Court on Thursday. Senior Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne found that a prima facie case had been made out against him on the murder charge.

The court ordered that Atkinson remain remanded, and the matter was sent on to the St Catherine Circuit Court. It is scheduled to come up there on June 19.

The charge stems from the death of 32-year-old inmate Jermaine Rogers.

According to the allegations, at about 2:55 p.m. on January 17, 2025, the two men were in custody at the prison when correctional officers heard a disturbance.

Officers went to check and reportedly discovered Rogers with several wounds to his body and heavy bleeding.

Rogers was carried to Spanish Town Hospital, located nearby, where he later died.

Atkinson was later held on suspicion of murder. Police subsequently charged him after a question-and-answer interview with investigators.

Attorney-at-law Abina Morris represents Atkinson.
