St Ann supermarket guard charged after shooting customer in Discovery Bay clash
Police in St Ann have charged a security officer after a male shopper was shot during a fight at a supermarket in Discovery Bay.
Gareth Wright, 51, who lives in Standfast district, Brown's Town, faces counts of wounding with intent, using a firearm to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm to cause injury.
The shooting happened on Tuesday, July 7. Discovery Bay police said that at about 5:50 p.m. a man went into the supermarket where Wright works. When the customer was on his way out, Wright asked to check his bag. The man declined.
A fight then broke out between them, police reported. During the struggle, Wright is alleged to have fired his licensed gun, striking the customer in the abdomen.
Officers were called to the scene and the wounded man was taken to hospital, where he was kept for treatment.
After examining closed-circuit video and taking a statement from the complainant, investigators arrested Wright and laid the charges. A date for his court appearance has not yet been set.
