Tension escalated in Troy, Trelawny, following the rape and murder of 10-year-old Shanai Ko and the subsequent mob killing of alleged perpetrator Delroy Ko. Police returned to the community after the suspect’s home was set ablaze following the arrest of a resident accused of taking part in the mob attack. A shop was looted and the suspect’s dog killed, while his injured father remained in hospital and his partner fled the area. Police appealed for calm and urged residents to stop blocking roads.

The Office of the Children’s Advocate condemned both the child’s killing and the mob violence, stressing that accused persons must face lawful investigation and court proceedings. The Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network called for a joint select committee of Parliament to examine laws, policies and agencies responsible for protecting women and children. It also recommended stronger survivor services, public education, professional training and programmes for boys and young men.

Jamaica has increased inspections of iceberg lettuce, other leafy vegetables and fruits imported from the United States amid a cyclospora outbreak affecting nine states. Agriculture Minister Floyd Green said imports are generally considered when local supplies fall after severe weather or during dry periods. More than 300 greenhouses were lost during Hurricane Melissa, although vegetable production later rebounded with assistance from RADA and other partners.

In St. Ann, 18 people were detained during coordinated, intelligence-led raids in sections of Ocho Rios, with particular attention on the Partown community. Police said three detainees would face Dangerous Drugs Act charges, while the others were being questioned about serious crimes.

Rashane Allen, also called Koko, was fatally shot during a separate police operation in Partown early Friday. Police alleged that he pointed a handgun at officers. He was pronounced dead at St. Ann’s Bay Hospital, and INDECOM is investigating.

In Wilton Gardens, Trenchtown, 27-year-old Tatiana Watkins was fatally shot while sitting outside on Thursday night. Police listed 21-year-old Emerald Hall, otherwise called Papito, as a person of interest and directed him to report to Denham Town Police Station by 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 25.

Cybersecurity specialists also raised concerns that the privately developed Support Jamaica donation website remains owned by Amber Group. Approximately $1.4 billion had been collected by February 2026. ODPEM told Parliament that an agreement governs the platform and that donation data should be removed after its use ends.

In Hanover, 30-year-old Justine Greenfield said she was devastated after finding her only cow dead on July 19, one day short of a month after purchasing it. She had intended to use livestock farming to help cover her son’s future CXC expenses.
