Tony Curtis recalls how Butterfly with Jigsy King became a dancehall favourite
In 1992, singer Tony Curtis teamed up with Jigsy King for the song Butterfly, which was produced by Roof International. Tony shares the backstory behind that song in our favorite culture segment. Tony, Butterfly, how did the concept for that song come about? What inspired it? All right. Butterfly was a dance. Originated in a Kingston, Jamaica. And um everybody was doing it, you know? Everybody was trying to make a song of the new dance that was coming. And um me and Jigsy King was there. After we we we um we just signed with Roof. Just won the contest. And um we were at the studio and he was telling me about this new dance named Butterfly. He said, "Butterfly, what that I'm going to make?" Jigsy come to me with it, you know? And I said, "Oh, me say oh, that I'm going to make." So him say, "Just sing something about Butterfly, man. Let me let me let me finish it up, man." So me there in the the studio was RFM. Barry O'Hare was the engineer and um I was there as a little young lad thinking, wondering, what should I sing? And then a little melody come into me my brain and it was like, Do you catch the brand new lick? Butterfly Jigsy coming and say, "Butterfly."
Do you catch the brand new lick? Marching up the old street. Hey, driving all the young girls wild. Break winding butterfly. And him say, "Mr. Video dance butterfly." And him say, "Take out the Mr." Just say, "Dance butterfly." Cuz him is a man where very instrumental when it come to my music. I say, "Even though I was young and him say, 'No, Mr. No, take out the Mr. Just say, "Dance butterfly." Dance butterfly to the latest style. The latest style and everybody in the studio was like, "Boom, boom, boom, boom. How you do that? Hit that." The producer, which is Courtney Cole, big up yourself father Cole. He was the one that come in the studio and him say, "Yes. Mhm. This song good, you know. This song like it, you know, boy." And him did the groove to the rhythm and the engineer a groove to the rhythm and everybody from out of the studio, um where where I work at the time,
we we we record the song and we carry it out on the road and we go play it up at Roof International and everybody up there was like, "Yes. Yes, how you do the dance?" And we never know if we do the dance. We are going like so. We are going like so. And him say, "No, I say you have to do wiggle your foot and come in." And we say, "Oh." So, we do the dance and we we do the song and and um Courtney was like, "We could carry it go Stone Love." And we go Stone Love try it out there and
