Tyreke Morgan tops U18 boys 200m semi-final at JAAA/PUMA national championships
Tyreke Morgan of Jamaica College took the first under-18 boys 200 metres semi-final on day three of the JAAA/PUMA National Junior and Senior Championships, posting 22.18 seconds into a -1.4 headwind to secure his place in the final.
Morgan started from lane five alongside Anthony Rochester of Titchfield, Devaughn Jones of Vere Technical, Dequan Dixon of Charlemont, Shawn Robinson of Norman Manley, Andre Geddes of Kingston College, and Byron Walker of Hydel. Walker, who had contested the 100 metres on Friday, was listed for the race but stepped away before the start.
The Jamaica College athlete entered as one of the pre-race favourites after finishing second in the 100 metres final the previous night behind teammate Kai Kelly. He was seventh in Class Two at Boys' Champs this year and carries a season personal best of 21.35, the fastest mark in the semi-final field. That time ranks him third among Jamaican under-18 sprinters this season, behind Mario Ross and Jason Pitter, who have focused on 400-metre qualifying for the World Under-20 team. Ross of Wolmer's was absent from the 200 metres, leaving Morgan among the leading contenders for the national title.
From the gun, Morgan responded strongly, running a controlled curve before pulling clear on the home straight. Rochester pressed late but could not close the gap, while Jones faded over the closing stages. Rochester finished second in 22.85, with Jones third in 23.01.
Commentary on the broadcast noted Morgan's composure under pressure after his 100 metres silver medal, describing even pacing and confident running through the bend. Jamaica College athletes have remained in strong form beyond the school season, with several targeting the NACAC Under-18 Championships as their main summer goal.
