The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean Foundation marked Labour Day with a service project at The Good Samaritan Inn in Kingston on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The outreach saw volunteers tidy and refresh the care facility's clinic, provide cooked meals for residents, and deliver toiletries, shelf-stable food and clothing in good condition. Among the UCC alumni involved in the work were Lashawn Mills, president of the UCC Alumni Association, along with Kimone Smith and Nastassia Haughton.
The activity was organised through a partnership involving the UCC Foundation, the Department of Student Services and the UCC Alumni Association. A total of 25 people took part, including UCC employees, scholarship recipients, graduates and community stakeholders, all working to improve the surroundings for residents and caregivers.
During the Labour Day effort, the team focused on making the clinic cleaner and more useful for those who depend on it. Volunteers also helped serve meals and hand over donated supplies to assist with everyday needs at the facility.
UCCF also worked with the Department of Student Services and the Students Council on the donation of food, clothing and toiletries. Alumni, scholarship students and members of staff were among those who helped with the meal distribution and clinic clean-up.
The Good Samaritan Inn has long been connected to UCC and its foundation. UCC adopted the institution in 2007 while developing the Foundation, which formally began operating that same year. Over the past 19 years, UCC and UCCF have supported the Kingston facility through donations, outreach, mentorship and other community programmes.
Labour Day is observed each year across Jamaica as a call to volunteerism, civic pride and shared responsibility. UCCF said this year's project reflected the value of sustained partnerships that can deliver practical benefits to vulnerable groups.
"Labour Day is a reminder that national development begins with service," said Shelly-Ann Sital, UCC Foundation Administrator. "Through our continued partnership with The Good Samaritan Inn, we are not only supporting immediate needs but also encouraging our students, scholarship recipients and alumni to see community engagement as an essential part of leadership."
The outreach was part of the Foundation's wider work to advance education, empower young people and support community transformation through partnerships and service-led initiatives.
