Victoria Jubilee Hospital Receives $32 Million in Maternity Care Equipment

With national birth rates still trending downward, Jamaica is reinforcing safeguards for newborns through a substantial equipment upgrade at Victoria Jubilee Hospital (VJH) in Kingston.

The facility, widely regarded as the leading referral maternity hospital in the English-speaking Caribbean, has taken delivery of life-saving technology valued at $32 million. The package includes 13 cardiotocography machines and a modern ultrasound system designed to sharpen how staff track the health of mothers and infants through pregnancy and childbirth.

Food For The Poor Jamaica and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints funded the gift through a joint partnership. Representatives formally presented the equipment on Monday at an emotional handover ceremony held on the hospital grounds.

Junior Health Minister Krystal Lee noted that VJH recorded roughly 5,200 births over the past two years. She said the new tools should support quicker spotting of complications and faster clinical responses when risks emerge.

"They represent reassurance for expectant mothers, confidence for our healthcare workers and, ultimately, better outcomes for babies and families across Jamaica," Lee said.

She added: "These improvements come at a time when the ministry continues to prioritise reducing maternal and neonatal risks and advancing the quality of care available throughout our health system."
