Fantan Mojah Dies at 49; Reggae Sumfest Announces July 18 Tribute

1 min readKingston

Reggae performer Fantan Mojah has died at the age of 49.

His family confirmed that the artiste passed away earlier that evening at the University of the West Indies Mona Hospital in Kingston.

A close associate said Mojah, whose given name was Owen Moncrieffe, had experienced worsening health connected to concerns about his heart before his death.

The singer was known for reggae recordings including Rasta Got Soul and Hungry. His most recent major appearance in Jamaica was at Reggae Sumfest in 2025.

Organisers of the festival have now announced that he will be honoured at this year’s staging on July 18, with the remembrance expected to form part of the event programme.

Sumfest head Joe Bogdanovich described Mojah as a committed reggae figure whose meaningful lyrics, sincere stage appearances and dedication to encouraging others remained consistent throughout his career. He said the festival team was deeply saddened and would recognise the singer’s life, creative work and enduring contribution to reggae and the Sumfest community. Bogdanovich added that Mojah’s presence would remain connected to the festival’s stage.

The Zee is also remembering Fantan Mojah by revisiting his performance at Reggae Sumfest 2025.
