Jamaica took part in global observances for International Day of Yoga on 21 June, with this year’s theme, Yoga for Healthy Ageing, placing emphasis on how the practice can support vitality across every stage of life.

Residents and visitors gathered at the historic Royal Botanical Gardens at Hope for a day of mindfulness and movement. The High Commission of India in Kingston organised the session, framing yoga as a bridge between health promotion and cultural exchange.

The United Nations designated 21 June as International Day of Yoga after India’s proposal was adopted by consensus. The date falls on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Officials noted that yoga has since spread worldwide, with this year’s observance reported in more than 190 countries and at more than 2,500 locations through consulates and missions.

As India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, yoga is “the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, balance, and heal.” Organisers echoed that message during the Kingston event.

Instructors guided participants on pacing stretches, adapting poses for mobility, and getting the most from joint-friendly yoga. The aim was to keep the practice accessible across ages and fitness levels.

Speakers stressed that quality of life matters as much as the number of years lived, and urged a holistic approach to maintaining health. Jamaica has long promoted ageing with dignity, and the Ministry of Health has run public campaigns including Moves to Move Jamaica, Jamaica Moves, and Do Your Share, which encourage healthier lifestyles.

The gathering closed with calls for renewed spirit and inspiration to care for both body and mind while protecting the benefits of healthy ageing. From Kingston to Montego Bay, organisers said the day underscored Jamaica’s commitment to holistic wellness, international unity, and shared cultural values through mindful movement.
