Father of slain 10-year-old Shani Coke recounts warnings in Troy, Trelawny

The father of 10-year-old Shani Coke, who was killed in Troy, Trelawny, has spoken about a man he says was brought back into the neighbourhood and about warnings he gave before the child's death.

In an interview, Mr. Coke said he challenged the person who allowed the man to return. He asked why the man had been brought back into the community. According to Mr. Coke, the reply was that the person felt pity for him. Mr. Coke said he begged for the man to be removed from the neighbourhood.

He also said the same man had come to his business place and bought files from him several times. On one of those visits, Mr. Coke said, he told the man that a girl lived in the area and warned him not to molest, rape, or kill her. He said the man answered, "No, Mr. Coke, me won't do it."

Reflecting on the interview, Mr. Coke said he was trying to say what he could about what had happened. "Life is so unfair," he said.
