The man accused of fatally stabbing 13-year-old Kemelia Paul has now been charged with murder following the teenager’s death.
Kemelia was injured during an incident at her family’s home in Bayshore Park, Harbour View, St Andrew, on May 9. She later succumbed to her injuries after spending several weeks in hospital.
The accused, 29-year-old Kemar Mitchell, had initially been charged with wounding with intent. He was scheduled to appear before the court on Wednesday morning.
According to investigators, Mitchell went to the residence to speak with the mother of his child when a dispute arose. The woman’s mother reportedly stepped in and instructed him to leave, but the disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation.
Police say Kemelia and another relative attempted to intervene and calm the situation. However, during the altercation, Mitchell allegedly pulled a knife from his waistband and stabbed the teenager in the abdomen.
The matter remains under investigation.
